Setting goals is important in all aspects of your life. We have Personal Goals, Business Goals, Spiritual Goals and Financial Goals. Everyone should have goals to help them steer through life.; not only goals in your mind but written goals you can refer to daily, weekly or as much as possible.
“If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else”
Setting goals is a great thing because what it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get. That is why goals are so powerful.
Also, goals provide long-term vision in our lives. We all need lots of powerful, long-range goals to help us get past short-term obstacles. We dream for the future and live in the present. Unfortunately, the present can produce many difficult obstacles.
But fortunately, the more powerful our goals (because they are inspiring and believable) the more we will be able to act on them in the short-term and guarantee that they will actually come to pass!
When thinking about what you want to achieve, keep in mind the S.M.A.R.T. principle:
Specific: Being vague with a goals is like saying “I want to be rich”. What does that really mean? Vague goals don’t get you the results you really want. Incomplete goals produce incomplete futures.
Measurable: Always set goals that you can measure. If you say you want to earn $1,000 per month and you only earn $500, then you can measure your results. This is as opposed to saying “I want to earn more money”
Attainable: One of the major “killer” of goals is setting a goal so high, that you can’t reach it. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t dream big, you should just set a goal that you can attain and then build off that to go higher. Ex: I am going to make $50K-$100K in (5-7) months unattainable for most people. However, it is possible to earn that amount of money over a reasonable period of time.
Realistic: Is this goal real? There are limitless possibilities out there for anyone to attain. However, can you reasonably make this goal a part of your life. And if you can, is it in a realistic time frame?
Time: Every goal should have a time frame attached to it. One of the powerful aspects of a great goal is that it has an end, a time in which you are shooting to accomplish it. Setting a time frame on a goal keeps you focused on the achievement. Otherwise, you will just get around to it someday and someday never occurs.
One more important aspect in goal setting is holding your-self accountable. Share your goals with someone else. Someone that is supportive of you and will help you not be a dream killer. We all have well meaning people in our lives that think they are saving us from ourselves but are actually holding us back. When someone supportive knows what your goals are, they hold you accountable by asking you to “give an account” of where you are in the process of achieving that goal.
So be S.M.A.R.T.and be Accountable. When you use these principles, you are putting yourself in a position of power that will move you towards achieving your goals.
To Your Successful Journey!
